UIM: Failing to Prepare….
There are all sorts of situations in life where we take preventative measures.
We lock our doors because someone might try to break into our car. We have a short-barreled shotgun because someone might break into our house.
We shouldn't "have" to lock our doors or have the shotgun. But we're able to get past our indignation and respond to the reality of our circumstances.
That's kind of the same thing we're dealing with in terms of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
I can’t tell you how many times clients have raged that the person who hit them didn’t have insurance (or didn’t have enough insurance).
No question: We shouldn't have to buy these coverages. Just like we shouldn’t have to lock the doors on our cars.
The legislators should pass laws that require everyone to have adequate insurance coverage. And everyone who operates a motor vehicle should purchase that required insurance coverage.
But that's not the way our society works. And because it doesn't work that way, we're lucky to have the opportunity to buy adequate uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
We lock the doors and have shotguns at the ready because we're unwilling to roll over. We're unwilling to be victims.
The same thing holds true with uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. You don't want to be in the position of getting into a really bad wreck and saying that someone else ruined your life because they didn't have enough insurance coverage.
The reality of the situation is that you could have purchased enough coverage to make sure your needs were met.

Regret is probably the toughest emotion to deal with. Sometimes regret is unavoidable. But it is avoidable when purchasing UM/UIM coverage.
